Why Use The Tor Browser?
Tor Browser is the strongest widely available tool for anonymity online. It routes your traffic through the Tor network, concealing your IP address from the sites you visit and making traffic analysis significantly harder.
It is based on an extremely hardened version of Firefox and includes strong anti-fingerprinting protections by default. However, anonymity is easy to destroy through poor operational habits. This guide focuses on correct use, not just installation.
Important Reality Check Tor Browser protects your connection. It does not protect you from logging into identifying accounts, opening personal documents, or poor OpSec. Most real-world failures come from user behavior, not from flaws in Tor itself.
Prerequisites
- A computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux
- An internet connection
- Understanding that Tor is slower than normal browsing
- Willingness to follow strict habits
Part 1: Download and Verify
- Go only to the official Tor site
- Download Tor Browser for your operating system.
- Where possible, verify the signature (recommended for higher-risk users).
- Install or extract the browser. Prefer keeping it separate from your normal browsers.
IMPORTANT: Never download Tor Browser from third-party sites or app stores.
Part 2: First Launch & Basic Settings
- Open Tor Browser.
- Connect to the Tor network (default settings are usually fine).
- Click the shield icon and review the Security Level:
- Standard: Normal daily use
- Safer: Disables some features for stronger protection
- Safest: Highest protection, many sites will break
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security:
- Enable HTTPS-Only Mode in all windows
- Ensure cookies and site data are cleared when Tor Browser closes (default behavior is already strong)
- Do not maximize the browser window to a unique size if you can avoid it, window size can contribute to fingerprinting. The default letterboxing is intentional.
Part 3: Critical Operational Rules
These rules matter more than any setting:
- Never log into accounts that reveal your real identity while using Tor Browser if your goal is anonymity.
- Do not use Tor Browser for both anonymous and personal activity in the same session.
- Avoid downloading and opening documents while online in Tor Browser (documents can phone home).
- Do not install extra extensions. They damage fingerprint uniformity.
- Do not enable browser plugins or change fingerprinting-related settings.
- Prefer text-based or simple browsing when possible. Heavy JavaScript increases risk.
- Assume that exit nodes can see unencrypted traffic (always prefer HTTPS).
Part 4: Recommended Daily Practice
- Use Tor Browser only for activities that genuinely require anonymity or censorship resistance.
- Keep a separate normal browser (or Mullvad Browser) for everyday logged-in activity.
- Close Tor Browser completely when finished.
- Avoid running Tor Browser and a normal browser at the same time if you are trying to keep identities separate.
- Be patient. Tor is slower by design. Anonymity is more important than speed.
Part 5: Bridges & Censorship Circumvention
If Tor is blocked on your network:
- Request bridges from the official Tor Project sources.
Bridges are special, less-public entry points into the Tor network that are harder for networks to detect and block. You can get them safely from the official Tor Project website or through their automated email service (usually by sending a message to bridgesATtorproject.org). Always use official channels so you receive legitimate bridges and avoid anything unsafe.
- Use obfs4 or other pluggable transports as recommended.
A pluggable transport is a method that disguises Tor traffic so it looks more like ordinary internet activity (for example, regular web browsing). Obfs4 is one of the most commonly recommended options because it is effective at hiding Tor connections from many blocking systems. When you request bridges, the Tor Project often provides them already set up to work with a transport like obfs4.
- Enter bridge details in Tor Browser’s connection settings.
Once you have the bridge information (usually a few lines of text that include addresses and settings), open Tor Browser. Go to the connection or network settings section, choose the option to configure a bridge, and paste or type in the details you received. After saving the settings, try connecting again. Tor Browser will then attempt to reach the network through the bridge instead of the normal, more easily blocked entry points.
These steps help you get around network blocks while staying within Tor’s recommended and safer methods.

Technical Notes (Advanced)
- Tor Browser is intentionally designed so that all users look similar. Changing about:config settings or adding extensions usually makes you more identifiable.
- Full-screen or unusual window sizes can weaken fingerprint resistance.
- For higher threat models, consider running Tor Browser inside a dedicated virtual machine or on a separate device.
- Tails OS provides a stronger amnesic environment if you need higher assurance.
Critical Caveat
Tor Browser is a powerful tool, but it is not magic. It cannot protect you from:
- Logging into personal accounts
- Revealing personal information in forms or chats
- Malware on your device
- Poor physical or operational security
- Behavioral correlation over time
