I need to take a moment to talk about Android, its role in the global surveillance society we live in, and the alternatives available to ordinary people like you.
In case you don’t know, I spent 15 years troubleshooting for Google while watching it turn from the world’s big, friendly librarian into a global data-harvesting and surveillance monster. And Android phones have been a massive part of the “Don’t Be Evil” corporation’s expanding spying and tracking infrastructure right from the release of the very first model.
Within 24 months of the Google Nexus One’s release back in 2010, Android had carved a 50% share of the exploding global smartphone market. Within five years that share was up to 80%+.
I was given a Google Nexus One as a Christmas bonus in 2009, about a month before the phone’s official release. Curious about what made it tick, I set about “dissecting” Android’s then still open-source code with an old friend of mine. Even back then the phone tracked its GPS location history, cell-tower and Wifi data, all of which was sent back to “the mothership” and permanently tied to its owner’s Google account “to improve user experience.”
That was the beginning of the surveillance and tracking mess we’re finding ourselves in now…
The Uncomfortable Truth
Even if you disable obvious tracking settings, use an audited VPN, or apply basic hardening, stock Android continues to spy on you. Advertising IDs, hardware fingerprints, Play Services telemetry, Firebase analytics, location pings, app usage patterns, and background data collection are irrevocably baked into the system. Many of these channels are also persistent and survive phone wipes and factory resets.
Worse still, carriers and manufacturers add their own data-collection (read: surveillance) layers on top. The result is a spy-in-your-pocket that constantly reports back to Google and third parties, even when you think you’ve locked it down.
You think “Flight Safe” mode does anything to protect you? Think again. The phone still continues to collect all the information as normal. It just waits until you turn cell-data back on to send it home to Google.
Right now we’re building out our members-only device hardening guides as part of the “Digital Camouflage” kit, and the role of creating the “Android Hardening Guide” has, unsurprisingly, fallen to me. Putting it together this morning was one of the most frustrating tasks I’ve undertaken in recent years, because there’s REALLY NO WAY to achieve any meaningful level of privacy with the damn thing, no matter what you do… which is why I’m writing this.
That Brings Me To GrapheneOS1
GrapheneOS is a free, open-source, security-hardened operating system built directly on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). It strips away Google’s entire surveillance stack while maintaining excellent real-world usability and delivering some of the strongest security features available on mobile today.
